Andrea Bondavalli secondment in Campinas
Prof. Andrea Bondavalli arrived on August 5 to Campinas for a secondment in the context of the DEVASSES project at University of Campinas (FT-UNICAMP).
Most of the secondment will be spent at the Institute of Computing, where diverse activities are planned with the local professors and students. This includes the “statutory” seminar, which in this secondment was on “Dependability modeling and analysis integrated in a model-driven engineering framework", and happened on August 17, and other seminars, such as “AMADEOS: bringing time awareness into the design of system-of-systems”, and also on “the GUARDS Architecture”.
This period also allows for lectures to graduate and undergraduate students on the themes of DEVASSES project, as part of the Transfer of Knowledge (ToK) activities and is also very useful for planning and coordination of future secondments of the UNIFI and UNICAMP teams.
Further ToK and dissemination activities were carried out, including visits and seminars at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), in Campo Grande (Aug. 14) and at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), in São José dos Campos (Aug. 18).
Prof. Bondavalli is an Associate Professor at the University of Florence (UNIFI) where he leads the Resilient Computing Lab. His research activity is focused on safety, security, fault tolerance, evaluation of attributes such as reliability, availability and performability of complex systems and infrastructures. He is the Principal Investigator of UNIFI in DEVASSES.
UC Researchers at UNICAMP
Naghmeh Ivaki and Prof. Nuno Laranjeiro are at Limeira, for two month secondments at School of Technology of the University of Campinas (FT-UNICAMP). During the secondments they will also have the opportunity to visit Campinas to collaborate in transfer of knowledge activities with the professors and students of the Institute of Computing (IC-UNICAMP).
Naghmeh is a PhD student at the DEI-UC. She obtained her Master of Science in Information Technology Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering in the Tarbiat Modares University (TMU), Tehran, Iran, in 2008. Her PhD work focuses on dependable distributed systems and her research interests also include security and big data.
Nuno is an Assistant Professor at the UC, and his research interests include experimental dependability evaluation of services, including robustness and interoperability assessment.
They made their presentations to the students of the FT, presenting their current work and recent results. Naghmeh presented the talk “Reliable Point-to-Point Communications: Design and Development Solutions”, in which she presented some of the current work of her PhD, while Nuno presented the talk on “Robust and Interoperable Services: Research at the University of Coimbra”.
During this period, they will be working with local professors, researchers and students to explore collaboration opportunities. Moreover, it will be possible to work with the local researchers on the topics targeted by the project work packages, including project deliverables under developments.
RADIANCE @ DSN and ToK Workshop #4
The first edition of the International Workshop on Recent Advances in the DependabIlity AssessmeNt of Complex systEms (RADIANCE) occurred in the 22nd of June together with DSN 2015 and the organization of the event is quite happy to say that it was a very successful event: it was “sharing the spotlight” with other 3 workshops and 2 tutorials, and thus it was quite satisfactory to see that it attracted an average attendance of about 30 researchers.
The workshop started with a Keynote by Bradley Schmerl on “Challenges in Engineering Dependable Self-Adaptive System” (slides here). Bradley is a Senior Systems Scientist at the ISR-CMU and presented the work that his research group has been doing to make self-adaptive systems more dependable. The keynote attracted questions that promoted a very interesting discussion that paved the way for the ensuing technical sessions.
A total of 10 papers divided in four technical sessions: 1) Security and Dependability Analysis; 2) Agile Development and Natural Language Requirements; 3) Safety Assessment in Industrial Systems; and 4) Fault Injection for Complex Systems. The presentations showed novel techniques, some of them preliminary, which were able to foster the discussion and promote the transfer of knowledge among the participants.

Transfer of Knowledge Workshop #4
Taking advantage of a large number of DEVASSES researchers in Brazil, a ToK workshop was organized by Profs. Cecilia Rubira and Ariadne Carvalho at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP).
To get things started, Prof. Daniel Cordeiro (IME-USP) was invited to present a very interesting talk on “Deploying Large scale Service Compositions on the Cloud with the CHOReOS Enactment Engine“.
The workshop had time for each of the partners to present their recent research. Particularly, the students of UNICAMP had opportunity to present several ongoing works and receive feedback. There was also specific time to present the collaboration works that started with the DEVASSES secondments, with some them already concluded and resulting in publications.
The workshop had an average attendance of more than 20 researchers; the full list of presentations can be found here.
Together with the workshop there was a project management meeting where the partners of the project discussed the current status of the project and the next steps of the works.
UNIFI researchers in Campinas!
A group of University of Florence (UNIFI) researchers arrived in Campinas in the beginning of May, to scout the territory for their colleagues arriving later this year. The group is composed by Leonardo Montecchi and Enrico Schiavone, who will be visiting the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) for three months, and by Tommaso Zoppi, who is going to stay a shorter period and then continue his secondment at Federal University of the Alagoas (UFAL) in Maceió.
Tommaso Zoppi started his PhD at the UNIFI in this year. His research interests are related to testing and especially focused on software anomaly detection, supported by fault injection and data analysis processes. During the secondment he will look for collaborations that can be further developed in the next years, mainly supported by Prof. Eliane Martins (at UNICAMP) and Prof. Baldoino Fonseca (at UFAL).
Enrico Schiavone obtained his Master’s degree at the UNIFI, few weeks before leaving Italy. His work focused on security mechanisms, especially multi-biometric continuous authentication. During his secondment he will collaborate mainly with Prof. Ariadne Carvalho, in order to define and perform experiments and usability studies regarding the proposed approach. It will be also a good occasion for talking about a future possible PhD proposal.
Leonardo Montecchi returns after last year being seconded at UFAL and also spending some time at UNICAMP. During this secondment, he will continue with the active collaborations within the DEVASSES project, and interact with UNICAMP researchers and students to identify topics for further scientific collaboration.
Besides that, all the three UNIFI researchers are also going to attend a “Português para estrangeiros” course, for 3 hours a week, to feel 100% integrated with the life and research taking place at UNICAMP!
Secondment Kick-off Workshop
To kick-off the works of the secondments, UNICAMP researchers organized a workshop on May 14th, with attendance of local students and professors, with a total attendance of about 30 people.
UNIFI presentations of the workshop included: “MDE in Large Scale Dynamic Systems: Active Collaborations and Ongoing Research Topics” by L. Montecchi, “Multi-Layer Anomaly Detection” by T. Zoppi, and “Continuous Multi-Biometric Authentication: Definition and prototyping of a solution for desktop systems” by E. Schiavone. The workshop included also several short presentations of IC students and researchers, to give an overview of the topics being researched at the institute.
The workshop ended nearly at dinner time, which made the perfect occasion to carry on the discussion with a nice aperitif in one of the nearby bars.
